Daisy Granny Square Tote Bag Tutorial

This is a complete written tutorial based on a video by Kenikse Crochet. Visual cues are included throughout to help you match each step with the corresponding moment in the video.

1. Materials

  • Main-color yarn: ~100 g (blue is used in the video)
  • Yellow yarn: ~30 g — flower centers
  • White yarn: ~30 g — petals
  • Crochet hook: 4.5 mm
  • Other supplies: Yarn needle & scissors

2. Crochet the Daisy Granny Squares

You will need a total of 13 granny squares.

Round 1 — Yellow Flower Center

  1. Create the center ring: Chain 3 and join with a slip stitch to form a ring, or use a magic ring.
  2. Work the stitches: Chain 2 for height (does not count as a stitch). Work 12 double crochet stitches into the ring.
  3. Change colors: Before completing the final yarn-over of the 12th double crochet, switch to white yarn.
💡 Visual Cue: The video shows how to leave the last two loops on the hook and complete the stitch with the new color.

Round 2 — White Petals

Make a total of 12 petals.

  1. First petal: Chain 3 (counts as the first dc). Work 2 more dc into the same stitch — 3 stitches total. Pull the working loop up, remove the hook, insert it into the top of the beginning ch-3, catch the loop and pull through. Tighten gently to form a raised 3D petal. Chain 2.
  2. Remaining petals: Work 3 dc into the next stitch. Enlarge the working loop, insert the hook into the first dc, and pull the loop through. Chain 2 after each petal.
  3. Finish the round: Repeat until all 12 petals are complete. Join to the first petal with a slip stitch, then fasten off.
💡 Visual Cue: Watch how the hook is inserted through the first dc before pulling the enlarged loop through — this creates the raised, textured petal effect.

Round 3 — Granny Square Border (Main Color)

  1. Join the yarn in any chain-2 space between two petals.
  2. First corner: Ch 3, work 2 dc, ch 2, then 3 dc into the same space.
  3. Work the sides: In each of the next two chain spaces, work 3 dc.
  4. Repeat the pattern of one corner + two groups of 3 dc around all four sides. Join with a slip stitch.

Round 4 — Widen the Border

  1. Slip stitch to the nearest corner space.
  2. Corners: Work 3 dc + ch 2 + 3 dc in each corner space.
  3. Sides: Each side now has three spaces — work 3 dc into each.
  4. Join with a slip stitch. Leave a long tail for seaming, or fasten off and weave in the end.

3. Joining and Assembling the Bag

  1. Joining method: Place two squares right sides facing each other (wrong sides out). Join with slip stitches through the back loops only (BLO) — this creates a decorative raised ridge on the outside of the bag.
  2. Arrange the squares following the layout shown in the video — generally four squares through the center with additional squares extending from both sides.
💡 Visual Cue: Around the 11:00 mark, an overhead view shows the complete arrangement of all 13 joined squares before folding.
  3. Fold and assemble: Fold the joined panel into the bag shape and sew or crochet the side edges together to form the main body.

4. Top Edging & Handles

Reinforce the Top Edge

Work one round of single crochet evenly around the bag opening — approximately 136 sc stitches total.

Create the Handles

  1. Single crochet around the top edge until you reach one upper point of the V-shaped opening.
  2. Chain 60 stitches for the first handle (adjust length as desired).
  3. Attach the chain to the corresponding point on the opposite side with a slip stitch.
  4. Repeat for the second handle.

Widen and Strengthen the Handles

Work 3 rounds of single crochet around the bag opening and along the handle chains.

Pro tip: Also work 3 rounds of sc around the inside edge of each handle — this makes the handles thicker, stronger, and more durable.

5. Finishing

  • Weave in and secure all remaining yarn ends.
  • Turn the bag right side out.
  • Gently shape and adjust the bag and handles.

Follow these written instructions while playing the video to compare your progress with each visual demonstration. If you find a specific technique tricky — such as the raised flower petals — replay that section slowly and pause after each step. Happy crocheting! 🌼
